Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter to Corporal Pelletiah Lyon from Captain Thomas Johnson ordering him to gather the commissioned officers and soldiers at the parade grounds at 1:00 p.m. on September 4, 1809. On the back of the letter is a reply from Lyon stating that he has conveyed the message to the troops.
