Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from C. R. Snell to Jacob Bailey ordering him to notify the soldiers to meet Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. Snell writes Bailey's name Bayley. C. R. Snell and Robert Snell are believed to be the same person due to other letters in this collection.
