Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He regrets that he cannot write her often and when he does write it is not a proper letter. There are 150,000 men and even more coming. Every day there seems to be a new crisis and he has to meet with the French Army. He needs all his strength to handle these frequent crises.
