Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Fitzhugh reports on the amount of coal aboard his ship, the U.S.S. Sebago. Written on board the U.S.S. Sebago, as part of the blockade on Mobile, Alabama. Docket contains signed note regarding blockade ship assignments; may be in Jenkins' hand with his signature. Fitzhugh was a commodore in the US Navy, noted for his capture of the Confederate Ironclad Missouri in June of 1865.

Thornton A. Jenkins was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy.
