At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Augustus is returning from Richmond, where he is a confederate legislator. He mentions a conscription bill (related to #60). Augustus says that he approved it very bitterly. According to his account, it had been amended a great deal since it was introduced, suggesting that conscription was a hot topic carrying a plethora of viewpoints.
