At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First two pages outline the "Organization of the First Division, Twentieth Corps. Commanded by Brig. Genl. AS. Williams. Pages 3-40 include the diary of the Atlanta Campaign, with almost daily entries from 4 May 1864 to 2 September 1864. There is reflection at the end, including statistics on killed, wounded, and missing, and comments that "This probably has been one of the most memorable Campaigns in the history of the War." Comments on the difficulties, deprivations, and continuous fighting over the past four months, and the courage and perseverance of his fellow soldiers. Pages 41-51, written in purple ink, cover Sherman's march to the sea from 10 November 1864 to 21 December 1864. Again notes the casualties and comments on the campaign. Very detailed. Sections of four pages each are numbered 1-10 and Sheet 1-3. Accompanied by a typed transcript.

Lucius T. Stanley (1844-1934) enlisted in the Union Army as a Corporal on 17 July 1862 at the age of 18. He joined Company A of the 107th Infantry Regiment of New York where he remained until 5 June 1865.
