Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Fremont, Commander of the Department of the West, informs Captain Merrill, "It is my intention to intrust you with the enlistment of a cavalry regiment in the States of Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky. Until however the consent of the War department can be obtained from Washington to this you are directed to act in St Louis as Inspector of horses brought by the different contractors for the use of the Fremont Hussars under organization in this city." Written on Head Quarters, Western Department stationery.

Merrill was brevetted Brigadier General in 1865.
