Written as President. Emily Ward was the daughter of General Ward.

Washington Decber 24th 1836
My dear young friend,
I have received your kind letter dated the 14th- instant- and sincerely regret that the daughter of my friend, genl Ward, should have thought it necessary to apologise for a trifle, which it affords me so much pleasure to bestow upon a friend- the lock of my hair solicited, is therefore herewith enclosed.
For your kind solicitude, so handsomly expressed, for my future happiness on my retirement to my peaceful hermitage, I make you a tender of my thanks. May you my dear young friend continue to improve in sincere & usefulness ( your letter before me giving ample testimony of your youthful years) until you become the omament of the society in which you may be placed- may you be blessed with long life- be a solace to your dear parents in their declining years, and after a well spent life, have a happy immortality, is the prayer of your
friend
Andrew Jackson

Miss Emily Ward.
