At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sir,
I've received your note with the Presidts. card of invitation and will with pleasure send notes or the [illegible] Alderman and [illegible].
The Sherriff and Govenor are also Charter Officers appointed by Government, who, from the latter Part of your note to me appear to be objects of the Presidts. Invitation. To them and to the [illegible] Chamberlain I will also send notes
