At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Harrison writes from the Auditor's Office: "I request the favor of your informing me on what day William Lewis Esquire resigned his Commission as Judge of the district of Pennsylvania." Docketed on address leaf.

Harrison was a merchant in Alexandria, Virginia before becoming the unofficial United States consul to Spain from 1780-1786, though he was officially appointed in 1790. He became an auditor in the Treasury Department in 1791 and served in that position until 1836.
