Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Invitation to "take a dish of Tea." Lear's address is identified as "33-Surry Street."

Doctors Edwards present his compliments to Mr. Lear, & is very sorry that he was not at home when favord [sic] with his visit last evening.
Doctor Edwards will be much obliged if Mr. Lear will favor Mrs. Edwards and himself with his company to take a dish of tea tomorrow evening. We will meet his friend Ms. Young then.
