Tells her he is now steaming up the English Channel and that he will send this letter by the first port they land in, either Calais or Dover. Left the waters around Brest on 17 January to go to Cadiz in order to reprovision, get coal, and have the ship repaired. Arrived in Cadiz on 23 January. Having taken care of the ship, they left Cadiz on 13 February and arrived at Brest again on 18 February. Reports the CSS "Florida" left Brest while they were away. Also, on 16 February, the CSS "Georgia" left Cherbourg. Says the "rebel Pirates" are probably sailing together. Will not be surprised if CSS "Rappahannock" left Calais by the time they arrive. Predicts the public will blame the "Kearsarge" for these escapes. Says "it is no fault of ours, the blame should rest entirely upon the U.S. government, for it knew our condition several months ago, and should have sent another man of war to assist us." Says their cruise should be over soon and expects to be home around later April or early May. Sends 2 photographs of himself (not included) and asks one to be given to Albert. Took them to show her the condition of his hand after the amputation of his finger. Has not received his allotment since he is so near the end of his cruise. Postscript says he received her letter of 11 January 1864 and a package of newspapers at Brest. Written on blue paper.
