Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Charles H. Whittelsey signs, confirming that he received $56.53 from J. Harper, paymaster, for his service from 18- 31 May 1863. Walter Mitchell is listed as Whittelsey's black servant. James A. Hardie signs an attached paper, attesting that Whittelsey accepted his appointment as captain and assistant adjutant general 18 May 1863.
