Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly created while Sherman served as Commander in Chief of the United States, 1869-1883. On verso, contains a note written in pencil and initialed by Sherman. Sherman writes, "Dear Hoxie- I would like very much to see you and [Green?]- either or both today before 1 pm- Something Special"
