Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cabinet card portrait of Prince Nicholi, "The Little Russian Prince." Caption on mount claims he was the smallest man in the world, weighing 16 pounds and standing 22.5 inches tall. He is 32 years old in this portrait. A native of Russia, he speaks German and English as well. The verso provides a bio of the life of the Russian prince.
