Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of seventy-nine letters to and from Sarah Kendall of New Lebanon, New York, 1860-1867. Most of her correspondents are Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Also includes 1 photograph, 2 newspaper clippings, several diary pages, and ephemera including dried leaves, small rocks, and a decorative cloth heart.
