Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs that he has received his letter about cordage and tea. States that the Committee of Manufactures of the Senate is now meeting about the tariff and will report tomorrow. Remarks that " ... you have already engaged their attention and we hope to remedy the evils suggested by you." Written as Senator and addressed to Browne in Boston, Massachusetts.

Browne was a merchant, navy and commercial agent, customs official, and a politician.
