At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Original draft of Special Order number 19, reorganizing South Carolina cavalry regiment. Details the reorganization, and lists which officers will command which companies. Written partly in pencil. Signed as Assistant Adjutant General on Beauregard's staff. At the time Beauregard was commanding Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

John M. Otey was General Beauregard's Assistant Adjutant General.
