At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

County, the Commissioners for the Expedition against Canada & Commissioners of the Indian affares" The Commissioners state that it would be a great risk to sail up the river into Canada during the winter, and make a number of suggestions of what to do in the mean time. They recommend placing garrisons in 3 new forts, repairing the forts at Albany and Schenechtady, keeping 200 Indians as scouts, and securing the loyalty of the 4 Nations.
