At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of Frank C. Stout (full name Benjamin Franklin Christian Stout) of the 129th Pennsylvania Volunteers, a nine month regiment. Collection includes two diaries, both of which are signed and primarily written in pencil. The first diary is approximately 140 pages and covers August-December 1862. The second diary is approximately 193 pages and covers December 1862-May 1863. Housed with the second diary is an unused postage stamp. Collection also contains miscellaneous documents, including a baptism record and medical information; a pamphlet relating an address delivered in 1897 by a Colonel Henry Royer; a photograph of the 34th Militia; and news clippings, including an obituary of Major Alexander Selfridge.
