Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection includes 92 letters to and from Oakes written while he served in the 84th Regiment Indiana Volunteers as a sergeant and later lieutenant. 83 wartime letters. Also included are a variety of personal papers, patent related files, two daguerrotypes and a copy of Noah Webster's "Pocket Dictionary of the English Language" inscribed by Cyrus Oakes.
