Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Worries that a Mr. Case who "cannot be trusted" and is a pawn of Nat Greene's will soon become the Post Master in Lowell, Massachusetts. Asks Blair to use any influence he has to try to instead get Mr. Weston appointed to this "important" position. Note on verso of address leaf saying that Weston will call on Blair soon.

Arthur Austin was the Post Master of Charlestown, Massachusetts.
Francis P. Blair was the publisher of the Globe, the official paper of the Democratic party for fifteen years.
