Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Woodbury, wife of Montgomery Blair, invites Lee to visit Portsmouth and updates her on the affairs of mutual friends and acquaintances. Circa date is based on a reference Woodbury made regarding Lee's 1843 marriage.

Lee was the wife of Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee and daughter of Francis Preston Blair, editor of the Democratic Washington, D.C. newspaper, The Globe.
