Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sends a draft of $350 to be applied to his credit. Comments that he is so busy he cannot write about private matters. On stationery from the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Hincks was Deputy Governor and Treasurer. Begins spelling his name as Hincks, not Hinks.

Hincks was a Union General and Commander of Camp Lookout prison April - May 1864. He led a Negro division in the Petersburg siege. He also served on court martial and recruiting duties intermittently. Nichols was a Cambridge Massachusetts Commission merchant.
