Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Begins by saying, " ... having been a hard worker all my life time, my sympathies have naturally always been on the side of the toiling masses." Comments that although he did not want the office of Comptroller of New York, he will appreciate the support of Benally's association and thanks him for his actions in the past.

Spinner was a Representative from New York and Treasurer of the United States 1861-1875.
