Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells Captain Bryant that he has directed Joseph Howell, the paymaster for the War Department, to send Bryant $1,000 for Captain Thomas Hunt. With an autograph note signed from Howell indicating "the above sum is enclosed in the letter to Capt. Hunt accompanying this." Written from the War Department.

Captain John Bryant was the Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
