Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests that Captain John Bryant send him information regarding the pay and service of enlisted artillerymen and artificers. The Lyman referred to was the Massachusetts congressman William Lyman. Written from the "Accountants Office."

Joseph Howell had served in the American Revolution, when the Constitution was passed he became Paymaster General of the Army, with the rank of Major. He held the office until his death.
Captain John Bryant was the Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
