At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes regarding a debt for Mr. Marshall. With a newspaper account mocking Clay attached to a blank page of the letter. Account from the Lexington Journal, 24 October, 1862.

James Brown Clay was a lawyer who later served as Congressman from Kentucky, a member of the peace convention of 1861, then joined the Confederate government once the Civil War began.
