Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recommending Joseph Mason for "a runner to a Court of Inquiry."

Robert Ould was the Confederate Agent for Exchange, in charge of prisoner exchanges throughout the Civil War, held the rank of Colonel, and was head of the Confederate secret police.
Isaac Toucey was the Secretary of the Navy, also a Senator and Governor of Connecticut, and United States Attorney General.
