Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recommending Mr. Cummings for pursership in the Navy. Bottom of page has an autograph note singed by John Appleton, also supporting Cummings. Letter may have been written to Appleton.

Robert A. Toombs was a Senator from Georgia.
John Appleton was a Congressman from Maine, as well as chief clerk of the Navy Department and Assistant Secretary of State.
