Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that he entered the United States service as a Second Lieutenant on July 1, 1840. Mounted on paper 20.5 x 29.5 cm.

George W. Getty was a Union General during the Civil War, and later served as a commander at the artillery school at Fort Monroe.
