Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed endorsement on verso from "Genl Thomas". Discussing demobilization of the army and moving of troops. Meigs had been appointed Quartermaster General of the Union Army eleven days earlier.

Montgomery C. Meigs was a Union Brigadier General of Volunteers and quartermaster-general of the United States from May 11, 1865 until 1882.
