Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requesting parole for a sick and imprisoned friend. Reads "One of the parties under arrest...is a friend of mine...I do not think there is anything against him. He is quite sick. Please parole him." Docket signed by Christian Thomson Christensen. Signed at conclusion and again in text.

Francis J. Herron was a Union Major General of Volunteers.
Christian T. Christensen was a Union Officer who rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General.
