Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Captain Kennon to Commodore Shubrick as commander of the West Indies Squadron. Kennon says he is forwarding the proceedings of the court in the case of William Smith (not included).

Kennon was later commandant of the Washington Navy Yard and was killed in an explosion on the USS "Princeton" in 1844.
