Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bope writes to his father from a camp outside Chattanooga after a fierce battle with Confederate General Braxton Bragg and his troops for control of Chattanooga. Praises the bravery of the Union soldiers despite being outnumbered. Describes the battle in detail. Discusses the upcoming election in Ohio.

Conrad Bope enlisted on 5 August 1861 in Ohio as a private. He was mustered into "K" Co., Ohio 49th Infantry.
