Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells father that he has enclosed $50, and apologizes for not writing a longer letter. Notes that he and brother Theodore are both in good spirits. Written in graphite.

James Goold enlisted on 29 August 1862 at Macedon, NY as a Private. He was mustered into "F" Co. NY 25th Infantry. On 19 June 1863 he was transferred into "I" Co. NY 44th Vet Infantry.
