Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his cousin William from Merriden Hill, three miles outside Washington, D.C. Continues letter from Virginia on 28 September 1861. Mentions heavy rain and marching through knee-deep mud. Discusses marches and the men's health. Written on patriotic stationery.

Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 as a private. He was mustered into "I" Co., Vermont 5th Infantry.
