Henry writes to his mother from camp near Bell Plain. Reports he was on picket duty for three days and has two drills a day. Mentions Union General Joseph Hooker is in command and they may be moving south soon. Discusses her desire to move west and advises against it. Complains about back pay. Reports the need for more drafting to replenish troops. Describes his living conditions.
Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 in Vermont as a private. He mustered into "I" Co., Vermont 5th Infantry.
