Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his mother from the U.S. General Hospital in Brattleboro. Reports that he has had chronic diarrhea for three weeks and left his regiment on 29 July 1863. Expects to return to his regiment within two to three weeks. Comments there is no possibility for a furlough.

Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 in Vermont as a private. He mustered into "I" Co., Vermont 5th Infantry.
