Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his sister from the hospital in Fredericksburg. Comments on a possible transfer and his hope to spend the winter in Vermont. Mentions the draft, but feels he is exempt now. Refers to a dream he had about a neighbor whose grave he dug. Letter has "U.S. Christian Commission" logo.

Henry enlisted on 29 December 1863 as a private. He was mustered into "A" Co., Vermont 1st Calvary.
