Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One folio containting two letters. The first letter is from Mrs. Prenties to Frances Davenport dated May 14, 1864. The second letter is from Hattie Stevens to Frances Davenport dated May 19, 1864. The letter from Mrs. Prenties is regarding visiting the hospital to learn the condition of Willie Davenport. A second letter is written by Hattie Stevens, Frances sister discussing the content of the first letter.
