Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mrs. L.A. Grant to Frances Davenport dated May 15, 1864. Offers sympathy to Frances for the loss of her husband in battle. Says that she can take consolation from the fact that he was a Christian and that he died for a glorious cause.
