Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Chaplain J.M. Cranford to Frances Davenport dated May 20, 1864. Informs her that her husband, Captain Davenport was wounded in the head on the 5th and was brought in to field hospital of the 2nd corps where he died on the 12th. Tells her that he is buried in the wilderness.
