Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother, reporting that business is good and that he expects to get the mill started soon. States, "I am glad to hear of your success in being elected to the house of Representatives and if you still stick to the Democratic principles of our Forefathers." Informs him that their cousin, Margaret Martin, fell down the stairs recently, but they are expecting her to recover.
