At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from the Office of the Democratic Central Committee of Champaign County Ohio in regards to a meeting that was recently held concerning the selection of the Democratic member of the Ohio State Legislature for the United States Senate. Verbalizes that he and their constituents would like to elect Judge John A. Corwin to the Senate. States, "Your constituents have proposed a candidate who is every way qualified have instructed you to vote for him, and nothing but a convention of the Democracy of Champaign county can absolve you from the obligation you are under to execute firmly, faithfully, and energetically your instructions. By that resolution, I understand that you are to vote for Judge Corwin all the time and demonstrate to the world that the democracy of this country meant what they said when thy adopted it, and that her Representative has the fidelity and firmness to see that it is executed." Letter has small red wax stain on top left hand corner.
