At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provides his son with details about various friends and family members. Admits he previously published one of Joseph's letters without his permission and asks if he can continue doing so. Writes to him, "The recent News of the taking of Richmond has cheered the hearts of those who are anxious for the Suppression of the Rebellion and the dawn of Peace." There are two small holes on the left side of the letter, causing text loss.

Joseph Maitland enlisted on 8 August 1862 as a private. He was mustered into "G" Co. OH 95th Infantry. He was mustered out 31 May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.
Richmond was not in fact captured by the Union until 1865.
