At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife that he "is well at present and hop I shal be til this cursed war is at a close for The soldiers have got tired of fighting and are talking raising and going home..." Reports that they still have not been paid, and that he was vaccinated yesterday for smallpox. Tells her that Mr. Mason Parker was there for a visit and he sent home a new rubber blanket and that he "wants you to get it and use it in wet weather and keep it to remember me by if I should never return..." Also asks her to "take good care of your self and children til I come home and not expose your self at the ful of the moon..." Concludes the letter by telling her that she needn't send more food as he wants to lighten his load and can get by with what he has. Letter is addressed to Masonville in Delaware County, New York. Possibly written from Washington, D.C, however postmark is partially obscured.

Abram Bogart enlisted on 15 August 1862 at Sidney, New York as a Private. He was mustered into "I" Co. NY 144th Infantry. He was transferred from "I" Co. into "K" Co. on 16 October 1862. He was mustered out on 25 June 1865 at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
