Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife, "dear friend and companion." Tells her that he received a short letter from James, possibly a neighbor or friend from home. Inquires about the letters he sent, one with ten dollars enclosed, the other with six dollars, and the one he sent to her brother. Comment that she should "keep your own secrets to your self... I find that the most intimate friends are the first to divulge a secret that you think the most of so you must look out for your self and be ruler of your own household..." Continues on to write that "a chirful heart is the best doctor in the world and not get cast down nor get the dumps for that is the worst disease we have in the army for I have seen that as soon as they get the dumps that medison does them no good..." Reports to her what he has been eating lately. Letter addressed to Mrs. Abram Bogart, Masonville, Delaware County, New York.

Abram Bogart enlisted on 15 August 1862 at Sidney, New York as a Private. He was mustered into "I" Co. NY 144th Infantry. He was transferred from "I" Co. into "K" Co. on 16 October 1862. He was mustered out on 25 June 1865 at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
