Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports a slight wound on his left leg. They have been in fighting position for over 50 hours but are doing well under Grant. "Oh when I come home I shall have plenty to tell you that I cannot now." Sends a belt buckle from a dead Rebel for Jed. Written from the 5th Maine Battery.

Brown enlisted as a private. On 10 December 1861 he was transferred to the K Company, Maine 18th Infantry, and a year later was transferred to the K Company, Maine 1st Heavy Artillery. He also served in the C Company, Maine Coast Guard. Brown was wounded 18 June 1864 in Petersburg.
