Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to his wife from a battle field three miles outside Manassas Junction. Describes in detail a fierce battle that lasted five hours and resulted in 60 killed or wounded soldiers. Expects another large battle soon.

Knox enlisted 3 December 1861 in Connecticut as a 2nd Lieutenant. He mustered into "B" Co., CT. 1st Heavy Artillery.
